RIVERMEAD LADIES CLAIM INAUGURAL "FLAGSTICK TROPHY" AND
OVGA LADIES "A" DIVISION INTERSECTIONAL VICTORY
One by one
the matches of the 2009 OVGA Women’s Intersectionals
walked on to the first tee and Rivermead Golf Club on
July 13 and had a good luck at the new trophy they were
playing for, The Flagstick Trophy. The ladies from
Rivermead, The Royal Ottawa, Rideau View, and the
Carleton Golf and Yacht Club had made the A Section
final for the matches and the honour of being the best
team in the region was theirs for the taking.
It proved to be a very game battle on a golf course in
impeccable condition, in rather varied conditions, but
in the end it was the host team from Rivermead that
slipped past the team from Carleton for an eight point
victory. Rivermead scored 33 points with 6 point
contributions from Marie France Blais, Nicole Lauzier,
and Guylaine Doucet.
After a rousing celebration team Captain Heather
Patenaude explained to Flagstick what they team victory
meant. “We are really proud to be able to say we have
the best team,” said the 2nd year captain. “There was a
tricky wind today so the conditions were tough but the
players did what they had to do to win. Carleton really
pushed us so it really came down to the end before we
knew we had won. It means a lot to win this event.”
Due to Rivermead’s current streak of wins and event
rules, the 2010 A section Championship will be contested
at the Carleton Golf & Yacht Club.

FLAGSTICK GOLF MAGAZINE & OVGA ANNOUNCE EXPANDED INTERSECTIONAL PARTNERSHIP
-Publication To Expand Role In All Intersectional Events-
Ottawa, Ontario, July 9, 2009 -Flagstick Golf Magazine is proud to announce that a sponsorship agreement for the Intersectional programs (Men’s, Ladies, Senior Men’s, Juniors) run by the Ottawa Valley Golf Association (OVGA) has been finalized effective for the 2009 OVGA season. The 2009 Men’s and Ladies Intersectionals will be taking place this Sunday, July 12, and Monday, July 13th, at various golf clubs.
The OVGA Intersectional Program is the largest participatory event run in the area for players at member clubs of the OVGA. More than 1500 golfers are involved in play annually. Players from 4 club teams compete against each other in match play competition and winning clubs in each division move up the intersectional ladder in each division and the fourth place team moves down one division. Spots on club intersectional teams are aggressively competed for at the club level.
“Ten years ago, Flagstick Golf Magazine took on the role of sponsoring the Junior Intersectional Championship through the introduction of the “Flagstick Cup” and in the past couple of years has taken a more active sponsorship role with the men’s regular and senior intersectional programs as well,” says Jeff Bauder, President and Publisher of Flagstick Golf Magazine. “We believe that the intersectional programs of the OVGA need to continue to build brand recognition throughout the region, making them an even more sought after event, with respect to participation and stature, than they even are now. It is our goal through an aggressive sponsorship program that we can help build that and at the same time bring an awareness to what the OVGA is all about and what it does for golfers in this region.”
The intersectional matches in the OVGA Men’s program have been in existence since 1934, when the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club was the first champion in the district. The intersectional competition was run by the Province of Quebec Golf Association through 1947 with one division of four teams. The Ottawa District Golf Association (ODGA) was formed in 1948 and built the competition to 6 divisions and 24 teams by 1980. The Ottawa Valley Golf Association, formed in 1981, has continued with the intersectional program and 64 OVGA Member Golf Clubs will participate in 16 divisions of competition in 2009.
In addition, an OVGA Men’s Senior Intersectional competition has been run since 1990 and now numbers 64 member clubs competing in 16 divisions. The OVGA Juniors have also run a competitive intersectional program since 1985. The OVGA Ladies Intersectional competition began in 1997 and now numbers 56 member clubs competing in 14 divisions.
As part of their sponsorship, Flagstick Golf Magazine will be providing new trophies for the “A” Division of Ladies and Men’s regular and senior intersectional programs as well as providing the renamed trophy for the Junior Intersectional Championship Team. The OVGA Ladies will be competing for “The Flagstick Trophy”, presented by Patricia Bauder – Associate Publisher, and the OVGA Men will be competing for “The Flagstick Cup”, presented by Jeff Bauder – Publisher. The OVGA Senior Men will be competing for “The John Holzman Trophy”, presented by Flagstick Golf Magazine and the OVGA Juniors will be competing for “The Gordon “Gord” Scott Memorial Cup – presented by Flagstick Golf Magazine.
John Holzman is a member of the Rideau View Country Club and he was a director with the ODGA as well as the first President of the OVGA and also a governor with the RCGA. John served on various committees leading to the formation of the Ottawa Valley Golf Association. Gord Scott was a member at Cedarhill Golf Club when he originated and ran the OVGA Junior Intersectional Program in 1985 through 1990. A former Tournament Director (1983-1988) and President (1989-1990) of the OVGA, Gord was quoted in the Ottawa Citizen in 1985 as to his objective in starting the junior intersectional competition. “I wanted to do something for the juniors. The more competition they have at a younger age, the longer they will stay in the game.”
Both Flagstick Golf Magazine and the Ottawa Valley Golf Association are proud to honour these two gentlemen for their past contributions to golf in the Ottawa area.
Flagstick Golf Magazine will also be presenting team plaques to the winners of each division in all three intersectional competitions as well as presenting individual plaques to the junior intersectional championship team members.
Rai King, President of the Ottawa Valley Golf Association says the support by Flagstick is very important to the organization, beyond its monetary value of approximately $24,000 annually in prizing and promotion. “The Ottawa Valley Golf Association is very pleased to have Flagstick Magazine sponsoring the annual Intersectional Matches. The matches are probably the premier event of the season for our top amateur players in the district providing a unique opportunity to compete in a significant team event. Flagstick has become a most respected communication line for all our players and its comprehensive listing of all matches as well as coverage of the top sections is much appreciated by the players. The relationship between the magazine and the organization is very much a natural one. It is very appropriate that the leading golf publication gives its support to such an important event and we look forward to working together each year.”
By mutual agreement the deal will continue as long as both parties are willing to participate.
