Alexander Of Tunis
The "TUNIS" is
the most prestigious amateur tournament held in the Ottawa
Valley district. One of the three most important Golf Québec
tournaments ( the others are the Québec Amateur and the Duke of
Kent ), the Tunis is held on a tri-annual rotation at either the
Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club, The Royal Ottawa Golf Club or the
Rivermead Golf and Country Club. These clubs were the founding
members of the original Ottawa District Golf Association which,
under the guidance of Len Copeland, past president of the Ottawa
Hunt and Golf Club, became the Ottawa Valley Golf Association
and was amalgamated into the Québec Golf Association now Golf
Québec in 1980.
In 1950, the
Governor General of Canada, Lord Alexander of Tunis, responded
to a petition from Stuart Wotherspoon, President of the Royal
Ottawa Golf Cub, and graciously agreed to become patron of this
amateur tournament in order to promote the game of golf in
Ottawa. In the intervening years many prominent amateurs from
the local area and throughout province of Québec have
participated in the event.
The winner is
assured a position on the Québec provincial four man Willingdon
Cup Team which competes against the other provinces at the
national level during the Canadian Amateur.
The Tunis is
managed on-site by the OVGA which provides the Tournament
Chairman and Chief Referee and establishes course length and pin
placements for the two day event. OVGA personnel also act as
rules officials, reception, starting and course marshals.
