About Us
The Ottawa Valley Golf
Association (OVGA) is a non-profit organization incorporated
under the Canada Corporations Act. The OVGA was formed in 1980
under the leadership of Len Copeland past President of the
Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club, then provincial representative of the
Ottawa District Golf Association which dated from 1948. The OVGA
is affiliated with the Golf Québec and the Royal Canadian Golf
Association (RCGA).
There are approximately 80 member
clubs in the geographic area stretching from Deep River,
Ontario, in the north-west, east to Thurso, Québec, south to
Alexandria, Ontario then west to Brockville, Ontario. The OVGA
has two mandates; one: "...to advance amateur recreation
and recreational activities through the playing of the game of
golf, including the standards of play and competition", and
two"...to act as the representatives of Golf Québec in the
Ottawa Valley" . Fulfilling these objectives involves
responsibility for all official Golf Québec and OVGA events held
in the district, the organization of a Junior Program for boys
and girls, handicap supervision, the rules of golf, course
measurement and course rating.
In accordance with its prime
mandate, the OVGA arranges and conducts about 25 golf
tournaments each year for male adults and junior boys and girls
with over 3500 participants. The major tournaments are the
Alexander of Tunis (see the table of contents), City And
District "A" Class, City And District "B" Class, District Match
Play, Junior/Juvenile Championship, Mid-Amateur and Senior
Championship. A number of OVGA tournaments are "designated
events" wherein participants' differentials (score minus course
rating) are used to establish a standing on the Golf Québec
regional Ladder (see table of contents).
Contestants who qualify on the
ladder are eligible to compete in the Alexander of Tunis, Duke
of Kent and Québec Amateur which are major area amateur
tournaments leading to entry into the Canadian Amateur
Tournament at the RCGA national level . |
